When to book a stay in Munich for less

It is cheapest in August, when the city is quieter and rates fall by about a quarter against the yearly average. September is the priciest, during Oktoberfest, when prices can as much as double and hotels fill up many weeks ahead. Outside the festival this is more of a weekday than a weekend city, so Saturday tends to be the cheapest day and Wednesday the most expensive, when business and trade-fair guests arrive. About a month ahead is enough for a regular trip, and you can still catch the lowest rates close to the date, around a week before arrival. For Oktoberfest, book exceptionally early.

Where a stay is cheaper and where it costs more

The priciest is the Old Town, Altstadt-Lehel with Marienplatz and the main sights within a walk. It also runs dearer in Maxvorstadt, the district of universities and museums. The most budget hotels cluster around the main station, in Ludwigsvorstadt, handy for arriving by train. Trendy Schwabing and the city outskirts, such as Milbertshofen or Moosach, come cheapest.
